LA FLAMBEAU
L'OPÉRA

Le compositeur David Bontemps s'associe à l'Orchestre classique de Montréal et le BrottOpera pour présenter à Montréal et à Hamilton au Canada la première mondiale de son opéra La Flambeau en février 2023.
​
Composé au début de la pandémie, cet opéra met en musique un drame aux thématiques fortes. Imprégné de mythologie Yoruba telle que préservée dans le Vodou haïtien, le livret dénonce la corruption, la misogynie et l’abus de pouvoir.
​
En sept tableaux, pour quatre personnages, orchestre à cordes et maracas, cet opéra est basé sur la pièce de théâtre éponyme de Faubert Bolivar.
​
Grâce au soutien du Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, l'enregistrement de l'opéra La Flambeau paraît chez ATMA Classique en février 2024, avec Suzanne Taffot, Catherine Daniel, Paul Williamson, Brandon Coleman et l'OCM sous la direction d'Alain Trudel.

THE OPERA

Composer David Bontemps associates with the Orchestre classique de Montréal and the BrottOpera to present the world premiere of his opera La Flambeau in Montreal and Hamilton, Canada in February 2023.
Composed at the onset of the pandemic, this opera conveys musically a story rooted in compelling, topical themes. Imbued with Yoruba mythology as preserved in Haitian Vodou, the text denounces corruption, misogyny and abuse of power.

Written for four characters, string orchestra and maracas, this opera is based on the eponymous play by Faubert Bolivar.
​
With the financial support of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, the recording of the opera La Flambeau is released on ATMA Classique label in February 2024 with Suzanne Taffot, Catherine Daniel, Paul Williamson Brandon Coleman, and the OCM conducted by Alain Trudel.

Bien ancrée dans la musique dite savante occidentale, l’œuvre se déployait néanmoins à travers les idiomes musicaux des traditions afro-haïtiennes. David Bontemps est un compositeur accompli, et il a écrit un magnifique opéra.
